Urinary incontinence and urge incontinence are related conditions but they are not the same.

Urinary incontinence

Urinary incontinence refers to the involuntary leakage of urine. This can occur due to a variety of reasons such as weakened pelvic muscles, nerve damage, or an overactive bladder. Urinary incontinence can be further classified into different types based on the underlying cause, such as stress incontinence, urge incontinence, or mixed incontinence.

Urge incontinence

Urge incontinence is a type of urinary incontinence that is characterized by a sudden and intense urge to urinate, followed by an involuntary loss of urine before reaching the bathroom. This can be caused by an overactive bladder, which is a condition in which the muscles of the bladder contract involuntarily, causing a sudden and urgent need to urinate.

While urge incontinence is a type of urinary incontinence, not all urinary incontinence is urge incontinence. Other types of urinary incontinence, such as stress incontinence, can be caused by different underlying factors such as weakened pelvic muscles.

It is important for individuals who experience urinary incontinence, including urge incontinence, to talk to a healthcare provider about their symptoms and treatment options. With the right diagnosis and management plan, many people are able to improve their bladder control and quality of life.
