Hepatitis

Here you will get an overview of the pathology, the ability to treat diseases with Oriental medicine, and with acupressure therapies along with other therapies combined.

The information is updated gradually and regularly. For reference only, not a substitute for your doctor.

Hepatitis is a disease that affects the liver and is caused by a viral infection. There are several types of hepatitis, each caused by a different virus, including hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E. While some types of hepatitis can be mild and resolve on their own, others can cause chronic liver disease, liver failure, or liver cancer.

Causes and Risk Factors

As mentioned, hepatitis is caused by a viral infection, with each type of hepatitis caused by a different virus. Hepatitis A and E are primarily transmitted through contaminated food or water, while hepatitis B, C, and D are transmitted through contact with infected bodily fluids, including blood, semen, and vaginal secretions.

Certain factors can increase your risk of contracting hepatitis, including traveling to areas with high rates of hepatitis A or E, injection drug use, unprotected sex, receiving a blood transfusion or organ transplant before 1992, and working in healthcare or public safety.

Prior to 1992, donated blood and organs were not routinely screened for HCV, which meant that individuals who received these transfusions or transplants before this time may have been exposed to the virus.

HCV is a major cause of hepatitis, and those who were exposed to the virus through a blood transfusion or organ transplant prior to 1992 may be at a higher risk of developing hepatitis C. This is because HCV can remain in the body for many years without causing symptoms, and may only be detected after significant liver damage has occurred.

It is important to note that the risk of contracting HCV through blood transfusions or organ transplants has greatly reduced since routine screening began in 1992.

Symptoms

Symptoms of hepatitis can vary depending on the type and severity of the infection, but common symptoms include fatigue, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, jaundice, and fever. Some people may not experience any symptoms, especially in the early stages of the infection.

Prevention

Preventing hepatitis involves avoiding contact with infected bodily fluids, practicing safe sex, avoiding sharing personal hygiene items such as toothbrushes or razors, getting vaccinated for hepatitis A and B, and practicing good hygiene, such as washing hands frequently and avoiding contaminated food and water.

Treatment

Treatment for hepatitis depends on the type and severity of the infection. While some types of hepatitis can resolve on their own, others require medical intervention. Treatment may include antiviral medication, immune system modulators, or liver transplant for severe cases.

Oriental Medicine

Oriental medicine, including acupuncture and acupressure, has been used to treat a variety of illnesses for thousands of years. While there is limited research on the efficacy of these treatments for hepatitis, some studies have suggested that they may help alleviate symptoms and improve liver function.

Acupuncture involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points on the body, while acupressure involves applying pressure to these same points. Both treatments are believed to help balance the body's energy and promote healing.

While oriental medicine may offer some benefits for hepatitis, it is important to note that it should not be used as a substitute for medical treatment. If you suspect you may have hepatitis, it is important to seek medical attention immediately.

Conclusion

In conclusion, hepatitis is a viral infection that can cause serious liver damage if left untreated. Preventative measures such as vaccination, good hygiene, and safe sex practices can help reduce the risk of contracting hepatitis. Medical treatment, including antiviral medication and liver transplant, may be necessary for severe cases. While oriental medicine may offer some benefits, it should always be used in conjunction with medical treatment.
